LOST & FOUND: SHIPWRECKS OF WEST MICHIGAN

Zeeland Historical Society, Zeeland, Michigan. May 2008-December 2008

Of the hundreds of ships “gone missing” on Lake Michigan over the past two centuries, dozens of these shipwrecks lay scattered off the shores of Western Michigan. Today, these wrecks represent a wide variety of vessel types that are unique cultural and historical artifacts, reflecting the rise of commerce on the lake that led to the settling and economic prosperity of the East Shore, offering a nearly complete representation of the evolution of marine transportation on Lake Michigan, maintained in a remarkable state of underwater preservation.
